چکیده

Jerk or jolt is the time derivative of acceleration. This study investigates the jerk response of inelastic Single-Degree-Of-Freedom (SDOF) systems under pulse-like earthquakes. Pulse-like near-fault ground motions can impose higher structural demands compared to non-pulse-like ordinary ones. Constant-strength spectra are developed in terms of the jerk response, considering different structural characteristics, including the strength reduction factor, the hysteretic model and the viscous damping ratio. An analytical equation is then proposed to predict the jerk demand of inelastic SDOF systems as a function of the elastic vibration period normalized by the pulse period and the strength reduction factor for different hysteretic models and viscous damping ratios.
