Title
Beltrania rhombica causing leaf spot on mango trees in Iran
Type Article
Keywords
Beltrania, Leaf spot, Mango
Abstract
Mango (Mangifera indica) trees are infected by a variety of pathogens that affect all parts of the tree and reduce the yield and quality of the fruit. Leaf spot pathogens cause serious diseases of tropical fruit trees and cause economic losses in these hosts (Okigbo & Osuinde, 2003). From June to August 2021, mango leaves affected by necrotic spots with red margins (Figure 1) were sampled in Siaho in Hormozgan province and Nikshahr, Ghasreghand, Rask and Konarak in Sistan and Baluchestan province, Iran. The number of affected trees (a total of 368 trees in 20 gardens) ranged from 25 to 45% in the two provinces. A total of forty diseased samples were collected from the 20 gardens. After incubation of the samples on wet filter paper in the dark for 48 hours at 25◦C, fungal isolates belonging to the genus Beltrania were obtained from the samples. Colonies of the isolated fungus had a greyish centre and white margin on potato dextrose agar. Conidia were solitary, 21– 26 µm long and 8–10 µm wide, and a rostrum 4.5–7 µm long (Figure 2) (Penzig, 1882)
