Gabriel’s Gift by Hanif Kureishi describes the life of 15 year old boy, Gabriel who lives in North London. He has a gift of artistic talent and imagination, yet he has to face problems and conflicts in his life relating to this gift. A series of contemporary issues such as broken family, pop music, protagonist’s interest in cinema and living in an international city like London helps him to get his maturity. In this novel Kureishi portrays the relationship between Gabriel and his parents. He depicts the parents’ failure and the success of child in re-uniting his broken family. In this study I will analyze the conditions that lead to Gabriel’s confusions over his problems and how he uses his imagination to overcome his confusions. As the study will clarify Gabriel’s parents are the main reasons of Gabriel's confusions: his father’s absent and his mother’s pressure and overprotectiveness. Gabriel overcomes his confusions with his imagination. I will discover how in the process of overcoming his confusions Gabriel finally achieves his maturity.
