Abstract

barley yellow mosaic virus caused mosaic, yellowing and dwarf in barley fields is one of the most important diseases of barley in Iran. A sum of 35 barley genotypes were tested at seedling stage (3-4 leaves) to determine their responses of barley yellow mosaic virus in greenhouse. 30 barley genotypes were collected from Mashhad and 5 from Tehran were cultivated in separated pots in controlled condition in greenhouse. For each genotype, two samples were considered one for mechanical inoculation by virus and second as negative sample. Then mechanical infection via virus extract were done on every genotype and after two weeks of mechanical inoculation, virus symptoms were surveyed. The results were investigated according mosaic severity and yellowing on all inoculated barley genotype and negative samples. The results showed that to 15 barley genotypes from Khorasan are highly resistance, 5 genotypes were moderately resistant, 7 genotypes susceptible and 3 genotypes were highly susceptible. All 5 genotypes from Tehran were susceptible according to the symptoms. This variation shows that different barley genotype, may have different resistance genes against viruses. Moreover 15 genotypes that were highly resistant are very useful for recommend to farmers especially in some origins that have problem with barley yellow mosaic viruses such as Kashmir, Torbat and Ghochan which are cities of Razavi Khorasan. Therefore, it seems that barley genotypes in Iran have different reaction against plant viruses.
