Abstract

The cotton whitefly, Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae), is a significant agricultural pest in arable lands and on ornamental crops in temperate regions of the world. Cytochrome P450 monooxygenases have been proven to be associated with high resistance in B. tabaci to the neonicotinoids. In this study, the RNA interference (RNAi) effects on P450 CYP6CM1 gene expression, resistance ratio and total P450 activities were evaluated in an attempt to provide a basis for potential RNAi application in management of this pest. Double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) of P450 CYP6CM1 was synthesized using specific primers and introduced into the insect body of B. tabaci adults through membrane feeding. Analyses of data showed that oral delivery of dsRNA can efficiently reduce the expression of CYP6CM1 (2 fold), resistance ratio (5.3 fold) and total P450 activities (45 %) in JR population fed by CYP6CM1dsRNA
