We describe the synthesis of 2-aryl-3H-indol-3-ones via oxygenation of 2-aryl indoles with molecular oxygen as the oxidant and oxygen source. Under an atmosphere of O2 (1 atm) or air (1 atm), successfully incorporated one O atom from O2 into 2-aryl indoles by copper/2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine (TEMP)-catalyzed. The high efficiency, low cost, high oxygen atom economy, and practical operation make the developed oxygenation system very attractive and practical. The advantages of this method include mild reaction conditions, simple procedures, and easy workup.
